2 of The Most Expensive Watches Ever Sold

Because Cool Watch > Generational Wealth

This week, we’re taking a break from posting listings and links to retail watches. Instead of sharing new watches for sale, we wanted to look back at two pieces that sold (also known as investments that paid) at recent auctions for staggering sums. Though it is unlikely that you or I could buy the two watches in this article at any point, the mere fact that a watch can sell for seven or eight figures is simply fascinating. Check out two of our favorite (and some of the world’s most expensive) timepieces:

Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A-010 | PATEK PHILIPPE

Photo from Christie’s

Reported Sale Price: CHF 31,000,000 (~$32,050,000)

Auction: Christie’s (Only Watch 2019 Auction)

Details: Currently the most expensive watch ever sold, the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300A-010 hammered at 31 million Swiss francs in November 2019. This Patek Philippe is a true 1-of-1 timepiece – the only Grandmaster Chime crafted from steel. According to Patek Philippe, steel is uncommon in the manufacturer’s lineup and virtually unheard of in grand complication construction. The Grandmaster Chime is the most complex Patek Philippe available and features twenty complications displayed within a double-face case.

Do you think this Patek is worth the final price?

“Paul Newman” Daytona Ref. 6239 | ROLEX

Photo from Phillips

Reported Sale Price: $17,752,500

Auction: Phillips (WINNING ICONS – Legendary Watches of the 20th Century)

Details: A piece defined largely in part by its provenance, the Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona Ref. 6239 exceeded all expectations when it sold for $17,752,500 in 2017. Actor Paul Newman wore this personalized Rolex during his racing career, popularizing the model and earning it the “Paul Newman Daytona” nickname. This example bore the engraving “Drive Carefully - Me” – a 1968 gift from his wife, Joanne Woodward. After being held by the Newman family for almost five decades, the watch was consigned for sale, selling for $17.75 million and earning the title of the most expensive Rolex watch ever sold.
