Since we discussed chronograph watches in such depth this week, we wanted to keep the train rolling with some of our favorite chronograph watches out there today.
Do you need a chronograph watch?
But they’re just so cool! And because of that cool-ness, we’ve put together a short list of three watches that incorporate chronograph complications into sleek design language – across a range of budgets.
Price: €540 (~$600)
Overview: Featuring two sub-dials symmetrically placed at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions, the Baltic Bicompax 002 is a sleek timepiece that seamlessly integrates classic styling with elements of sleek modernity. Reminiscent of the retro-futurism that defined design language in the 1940s and 1950s, this silver and navy timepiece features a silver-toned brushed dial with high-contrast black Arabic numbers and hands. The stainless steel case measures 38mm in diameter and beautifully pairs with the navy leather strap.
Powered by the ST1901 caliber movement – a hand-wound mechanical chronograph movement developed by the Seagull Manufacture – the Bicompax 002 has a 42-hour power reserve and can measure elapsed time up to 30 minutes. You can purchase this Baltic for €540 (~$600), making it one of the more reasonably priced non-quartz chronographs currently on the market.
Price: $1,250
Overview: This piece contended for a feature in another trelet article about racing-inspired watches, but its unique quad-sub-dial configuration made it a much better candidate for this week’s newsletter. Featuring a 12-hour three-dial chronograph and a fourth power reserve indicator sub-dial, the Promaster Tsuno Chrono Racer offers buyers limited-edition exclusivity and performance-oriented functionality in one elegant package. This Citizen also features yellow accents that smartly contrast with the black-toned sub-dials and deepen the lush green hue of the dial.
Wrapped in a Super Titanium™ case that resists water up to 200 meters, this Citizen is powered by the company’s proprietary Eco-Drive technology. The band material parallels the case – it, too, is made of Super Titanium™ to maximize its durability. If you like function-inspired yet elegant watches, this Promaster may be the piece for you.
Price: $14,700
Overview: One of Cartier’s most prestigious timepieces, the Santos is an iconic watch in and out of the watch industry. The extra-large model (44.9mm) seen here elevates this legendary watch with a caliber 1904 CH MC chronograph mechanical movement driving the three sub-dials (12 hours at 9 o’clock, 30 minutes at 3 o’clock, and seconds at 6 o’clock). Water-resistant up to 10 bar, this classic watch is built to last and designed for style.
Cartier paid extensive detail to the visual appeal of the watch, pairing the stainless steel case with a yellow gold bezel and black steel hands that contrast with the lighter materials surrounding them. Santos owners are able to interchange bracelets with ease thanks to Cartier’s “QuickSwitch” system, which eliminates the need for tools when making the switch. Priced at $14,700, the Santos is the most expensive on today’s list, but it packs one of the biggest punches when it comes to materials, brand premium, and unique features.
